Skeleton Point

Skeleton Point is a named viewpoint on South Kaibab Trail, about three miles down from the South Rim. This is a substantial canyon hike, not a quick lookout: the National Park Service estimates 6 miles round trip, 4–6 hours, and a 2,040-foot descent to climb back out. Go for the long, open walk and river views; if that commitment feels like too much, Cedar Ridge is a shorter turnaround on the same trail.

The well-defined dirt trail drops from the rim in tight switchbacks, then crosses open ledges with little shade. Ooh Aah Point is the first broad panorama; Cedar Ridge comes next, with a more gradual stretch beyond it toward Skeleton Point. The point is the last named stop before the South Kaibab makes a longer descent toward the Tip-Off. The route is steep and exposed on the way down, and the return is an equally serious uphill climb.

This short section of trail crosses a striking stack of Grand Canyon layers. The upper switchbacks descend through Kaibab Limestone; lower down, the trail reaches Coconino Sandstone, where the rock shows angled cross-bedding. Across the canyon, the exposed strata build into broad terraces. The layers along this route reach back roughly two billion years into the canyon’s geologic story.

From Skeleton Point, look across the layered walls to the Colorado River far below; Phantom Ranch sits in a thin green corridor in the canyon. This is a good place to stop and look carefully before turning around. For a photo, keep some of the near ledge in the frame with the river and opposite canyon walls beyond it; the extra depth helps the scale read.

There is no water along the trail, so plan your water before leaving the trailhead. Pit toilets are available at Cedar Ridge, before the point. South Kaibab has little shade and almost no protection from passing storms, and temperatures rise as you descend. In summer, the park advises avoiding inner-canyon hiking from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park recommends checking with a ranger before attempting Skeleton Point as a day hike.

There is no public parking at the South Kaibab Trailhead. Take the free Orange Route shuttle from the Visitor Center; the ride is about nine minutes. The shuttle schedule changes, so check it before you go.
