Overview
Amphitheater Lake is a jewel-box alpine lake tucked at roughly 9,700 feet, cradled by granite walls beneath Disappointment Peak with the upper Teton massif looming close. It’s the kind of payoff that makes you forget the burn in your calves.
The Hike In
You’ll earn it: about 10 miles round-trip from Lupine Meadows with around 3,000 feet of elevation gain on steady switchbacks. Most hikers tag Surprise Lake first, then continue a short bit farther to Amphitheater Lake at trail’s end. Expect a challenging, classic Grand Teton outing rather than a casual lakeside stroll.
What You’ll See
Think wildflower meadows in summer, stark granite, and big views toward the Grand Teton, Mount Owen, and surrounding cliffs. Even in summer you may encounter lingering snow near the top, and the lakeshore itself feels like a natural amphitheater of rock and ice-polished terrain.
Wildlife & Activities
Keep an eye (and ear) out for marmots and pikas in the talus, deer in the forested stretches, and mountain birdlife around the lakes. Bear sightings do happen along this route—carry bear spray and know how to use it. Anglers do fish these lakes; bring the proper permits if that’s your plan.
Conditions to Respect
Snow can persist well into the season, and the park advises not to attempt this route on snow without experience and proper gear. Afternoon thunderstorms are common—start early so you’re off the high country before things build. Mosquitoes can be feisty in early summer.
Best Time to Visit
Go early on clear summer mornings for easier parking, cooler temps, and softer light on the lake’s cirque walls. Weekdays see fewer people. Shoulder seasons can be wonderful but often snowy—only proceed if you have the skills and equipment.
Practicalities
There are no facilities at the lake—no tables, toilets, or water taps. Restrooms and parking are at Lupine Meadows, and that’s it. Bring layers, sun protection, plenty of calories, a water filter, and trekking poles for the descent. Leave No Trace matters here; this is pure wilderness.
