Arizona Island Picnic Area is a small picnic spot with a few tables in a meadow surrounded by mature forest. It's a short place to stop for a snack while you're traveling to or from Yellowstone; the tables and meadow are the reason to pause.

Keep expectations simple: a few tables, meadow and forest. There are no restrooms or trash receptacles at this stop. For those, drive north to Lakeview Picnic Area or south to Leeks Marina. Bears use developed areas in Grand Teton, so keep food easy to pack away and put trash in bear-resistant dumpsters.

Before Jackson Lake was dammed, this land was a peninsula; the changed shoreline turned it into an island. The picnic area is named for Arizona George, a trapper who worked here with his partner, Dog-faced Pete. Arizona George was found dead in 1888 on the creek that bears his name. It's an unexpectedly grim story behind a quiet lunch stop.
