Jackson Lake Overlook

Jackson Lake Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on the lake’s eastern shore, with the Tetons rising across the water to the west. It is an easy stop for a broad lake-and-mountain view, and the far shore has a patchwork of burned forest worth a closer look. For photos, include some of the lake: it gives the peaks their scale, and calm water can catch their reflection.

The burned forest comes from the 1974 Waterfalls Canyon fire, one of the early naturally ignited wildfires that the park allowed to burn. The patchwork is part of the view now, and a reminder that fire is one of the forces shaping this ecosystem.

The Tetons sit at a geological crossroads. Glaciers, earthquakes and volcanoes have all shaped the range, while neighboring ranges formed at different times and through different forces. The valley’s name has a human story too: it was named for fur trapper David E. Jackson of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Trappers called a mountain-ringed valley a “hole.”

The overlook is directly beside the north stretch of US 89/191/287, so treat it as a highway pullout and get fully clear of traffic before stepping out. Parking reports range from easy to awkward, so take care as you enter from the highway. The viewpoint is listed as wheelchair accessible, though its route and surface are not described. Reaching the water is a separate short, steep bank scramble, not a maintained shoreline path. No restroom is listed at the overlook; plan a facilities stop elsewhere. The exposed shore can be windy or chilly, so bring a layer if you plan to linger.
