Upper Kalimna Falls

Overview

Upper Kalimna Falls is the wilder, taller sibling to Lower Kalimna, tucked in the forest behind Lorne. When open, it’s reached via a gentle creek‑valley walk that follows an old timber tramline through blue gums and towering tree ferns. Expect a classic Otways scene: cool air, birdsong, and a clean drop of water framed by mossy rock.

Current Status

As of November 20, 2025, the track to Upper Kalimna Falls is closed until further notice due to damage to a pedestrian bridge. Lower Kalimna Falls remains accessible from Sheoak Picnic Area. Check Parks Victoria alerts before you go.

Getting There

Start at Sheoak Picnic Area near Lorne. That trailhead has toilets, a shelter, and gas barbecues, but there are no services once you leave the carpark. Bring your own water and snacks.

Trail & Conditions

From Sheoak, it’s about 5.5 km return to Lower Kalimna Falls on mostly gentle Grade 3 track. Continuing to Upper makes it roughly 8–8.5 km return in total. The path can be muddy and slippery after rain, with the occasional downed branch or tree—good shoes are non‑negotiable.

What You’ll See (when open)

• Lower Kalimna: a peaceful grotto where you can walk behind the curtain of water.
• Upper Kalimna: a taller 20–25 m cascade viewed from a lookout, with a more open amphitheatre and stronger flow after rain.

Wildlife

This is classic Otways habitat, and you may encounter protected natives like echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots. Enjoy them quietly and don’t disturb or feed wildlife.

Photography Tips

Upper can look harsh at midday; the light is far kinder early or late. After rain, bring a lens cloth for spray. A wide‑angle works well for framing the cliff and ferny foregrounds.

Best Time to Visit

Waterfalls shine after rain, and early morning or late afternoon brings softer light and fewer people. Late spring to early summer usually pairs pleasant temperatures with decent flow. Visit in daylight—this track isn’t one to tackle at night.
