The station opened on 1 April 1936 as the Victorian end of the first submarine telephone cable connecting Tasmania to mainland Australia via King Island. It carried six telephone channels, seven telegraph channels and an ABC broadcast channel between Melbourne and Hobart. The cable operated until 1968, when a failure between King Island and northern Tasmania ended the link and radio replaced it.

The collection includes objects connected with the Casino, Wollamai and Speculant, alongside tools, furniture and textiles dating to the 19th century. Before the Great Ocean Road, ships and shipwrecks were a primary part of access to this isolated community; the museum ties that maritime past to the town’s wider story. Its extensive photographs and family histories bring local people into the picture as well as the infrastructure.
