Overview

A quick rainforest escape just outside Lorne, Sheoak Falls rewards a short, stepped walk with a clean 15 m cascade dropping into a treed pool. It’s a classic Great Ocean Road stop: coastal air, lush gullies, and a payoff that feels bigger than the effort.

The Walks

From Sheoak Falls Carpark: roughly 600 m each way (about 30–60 minutes return), on a well‑formed path with plenty of stairs. The final viewing area sits close to the plunge pool.
Swallow Cave extension: continue uphill for alternative viewpoints and the grotto known as Swallow Cave. Expect a steeper climb and a creek crossing that can be impassable in winter or after rain. The out‑and‑back is a short, moderate add‑on.
Longer approach: start at Sheoak Picnic Area for a more substantial 3.6 km (one way) hike to the falls, then link other nearby waterfall tracks from the same hub.

What You’ll See

Sheoak Creek threads through coastal woodland into wet forest with tree ferns, mossy rock and eucalypts. After dry spells the flow can be modest, but after rain the falls fan out beautifully. Along the track there are occasional sea glimpses and views down the creek.

Wildlife & Nature Notes

Tree Martins use Swallow Cave in spring through autumn, collecting mud from the creek to build nests. Keep an eye out for short‑beaked echidnas and signs of long‑nosed bandicoots (their diggings can make uneven footing), and be snake‑aware in warmer months. Very lucky visitors have reported platypus or baby eels in Sheoak Creek—observe quietly from the bank and never enter the water near the falls.

Culture & Care

The area around Swallow Cave holds cultural significance for the Eastern Maar and Gunditjmara peoples. Stay on formed tracks, respect signage, and leave the cave and nests undisturbed.

Parking: small roadside carpark at the trailhead; it fills fast on weekends/holidays.
Facilities: none at the falls carpark. Toilets, picnic tables and BBQs are at Sheoak Picnic Area nearby.
Surface & safety: many stairs; rocks and edges near the water can be extremely slippery due to algae. Assess the creek before attempting the Swallow Cave extension.
Fees/hours: free; visit in daylight for safety. Check the official change‑of‑conditions before you go—tracks can close temporarily for weather or planned burning.

Best Time to Visit

For water flow, target after rain and the cooler months (May–September). For fewer people, go early morning or late afternoon on weekdays. Photographers get soft light at those times; bring a small tripod, but keep clear of wet rock.
