Sheoak Falls

Sheoak Falls is a 15-metre cascade on Sheoak Creek, about 5 km west of Lorne. It spills into a pool in a forested gully and makes a good Great Ocean Road stop if you want a waterfall without committing to a long hike. The short falls walk is about 1.2 km return through coastal woodland. It's short, but steep steps make it more of a hike than a flat stroll.

A formed track drops by boardwalk to Sheoak Creek, then follows the water upstream as the valley narrows into a rocky gorge. At the first junction, take the signed lower track to the platform at the foot of the falls. From there you can see the deep pool and water ferns tucked around the rocks. The stepped sections are steep, so take your time on the way back up.

The longer falls-and-cave outing is about 2.2 km return and takes around an hour. From the junction, more steep steps climb to a lookout over the gully; the route then crosses Sheoak Creek on stepping stones before reaching the Swallow Cave viewing point. Don't attempt the crossing if water covers the stones. If you stop at the falls, you still get the main payoff without the extra climb and crossing.

The Swallow Cave viewpoint is a separate stop farther along the walk, and a good place to watch for Tree Martins. They breed around the viewing platform and are usually seen there in spring, summer and early autumn. At the falls themselves, the steep-sided gorge, rocky walls and ferns make the setting as much of the visit as the cascade.

The flow varies with recent rain; after a dry spell, the falls can be weak or dry. At the lower platform, frame the water with the dark rock and pool in view rather than cropping tightly to the white cascade. That shows how the waterfall sits in the gorge.

The roadside Sheoak Falls car park is on the Great Ocean Road, about 5.9 km west of the Erskine River bridge at Lorne. There is an information board but no other visitor facilities, so plan for food and toilets elsewhere. The separate Sheoak Picnic Area is a different stop; don't assume its facilities are at the falls car park.
