“Cumberland River is ahead, with the walk to Jebb's Pool starting at the visitor car park. I'd choose the three-kilometre return walk for its shaded gorge, low cascades and rock shelves.”

Jebbs Pool is a natural freshwater pool on the Cumberland River, tucked among rock shelves and small cascades in Great Otway National Park. The short walk is the point: come for a shaded gorge, a clear-water pause, and the chance to cool off when the river is low. This is an unmanaged river, not a built swimming area.

Start at the Cumberland River visitor car park on the Great Ocean Road, about 8 km west of Lorne. The pool walk is roughly 3 km return and around 1.5 hours; longer Cumberland River routes continue farther upstream toward Cumberland Falls. The track starts beside the river, passes the reserve and cabins, then narrows into the gorge. Expect rocky footing and a river crossing; do not attempt it when the river is high, especially after rain. Picnic tables are at the access car park, but the nearby holiday park's toilets and kiosk are for guests, not general visitors.

Rock shelves and cascadesWater steps over smooth rock ledges into shallow edges and deeper pockets.

Water steps over smooth rock ledges into shallow edges and deeper pockets. A narrow chute above the pool has been described as a natural slide, but its landing is small and submerged rocks make it a poor place for a careless plunge. From stable rock, look across the pool toward the cascades and the steep green slopes; the wet shelves themselves can be slippery.

Forest along the riverTall eucalypts, Blackwoods and tree ferns crowd the steep sides of the gorge.

Tall eucalypts, Blackwoods and tree ferns crowd the steep sides of the gorge. The local walk's bird list includes Forest Ravens, Golden Whistlers and Eastern Yellow Robins, while clear water may reveal small native blackfish. Listen and look as you follow the river rather than expecting a single viewpoint to carry the whole visit.
