Thomas Divide Trail

Thomas Divide is a roughly 14-mile, one-way ridge walk through a mostly wooded stretch of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It starts at a small pullout on Newfound Gap Road and ends on the Deep Creek side near Tom Branch Road. Plan on about eight hours on the trail, with roughly 1,800 feet of climbing and 4,250 feet of descent. This is a point-to-point hike, so arrange a shuttle or two cars before you start. Published distance estimates vary; this entry follows the complete mapped ridge corridor at about 13.6 miles. Check which southern access your ride is using.

If you want a shorter outing, turn around at the Kanati Fork Trail junction for about 3.4 miles total. The upper section is the gentler part of the route and the best choice if you mainly want a ridge walk without a full-day commitment.

The north end begins in a low saddle beside US 441. The path is unusually even and soft underfoot for a mountain trail, with a gentle start. It briefly leaves Thomas Divide for a bend along Beetree Ridge, then returns to the main ridge. About two miles in, a broad dell marks the Kanati Fork Trail junction. From there, a moderate half-mile climb reaches Nettle Creek Bald.

Despite the name, Nettle Creek Bald is overgrown. It gives only limited openings south toward Newton Bald and east across the Oconaluftee watershed to Hughes Ridge, rather than a wide summit panorama. Leaf fall can open up more of the ridge views.

Past Nettle Creek Bald, the route drops for a little over a mile to Tuskee Gap, climbs for about half a mile, then reaches Sunkota Ridge Trail. It continues on a gentler rise for nearly another mile to Newton Bald Trail. Expect a series of wooded climbs and descents here, not a long flat walk between viewpoints.

Beyond Newton Bald, the trail gives you about a mile with less climbing before a very steep descent into Deeplow Gap. It crosses the Deeplow Gap Trail, climbs steeply for about a mile, then drops again toward the park boundary. After the Indian Creek Motor Trail junction, the narrow cushioned footpath becomes a wider, rougher unimproved road for the final couple of miles to Stone Pile Gap and the Deep Creek road access. Wet crossings with logs and rocks have been reported after rain.

Most of the route stays beneath hardwoods and eastern hemlock. Mid-summer brings Turk's-cap lilies, wood betony, and other wildflowers. The overgrown bald limits the view in leaf-on season; after leaves fall, more of the upper crest and surrounding ridges come into view. This is a quiet-feeling woodland traverse, not a waterfall hike or a string of open overlooks.

Thomas Divide is named for Cherokee leader William “Little Will” Thomas, a 19th-century advocate for the Cherokee people. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the trail in 1934, the same year Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established. That long, softly graded upper tread is a good reason to choose the shorter Kanati Fork outing even if you don't plan to cross the whole divide.
