Trail guide
Mattie Mitchell Trail is a 250 m loop in Gros Morne National Park, about a 15-minute interpretive walk through woods to a quiet brook. It tells the story of Mattie Mitchell, a Mi’kmaw hunter, guide and prospector whose work helped explore and map Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula. Parks Canada recognizes his contribution to the region’s exploration, mapping, and twentieth-century forestry and mining economy. Come for a quick woodland pause and local history; the loop is easy and over in a quarter-hour.
The full 250 m is a loop, so it returns to the starting access without an out-and-back retrace. Parks Canada rates it easy and lists just 5 m of elevation gain. The brook is the walk’s quiet destination; take a little longer if you want to pause with the interpretation.
Start at the Mattie Mitchell trailhead on Route 430 near Rocky Harbour. A Parks Canada national park entry pass is required. Allow about 15 minutes for the walk, plus time with the interpretive story.
