Gros Morne National Park, NL
Follow an old logging road to a quiet cove and lost settlement.
Overview
Stanleyville Trail is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) out-and-back from the day-use playground at Lomond Campground to the abandoned community at Paynes Cove. Allow 1½–2 hours. It’s a moderate walk with a real climb and a destination beyond the shore: remains of an early-1900s logging settlement.

Trail guide
The trail follows an old road through second-growth forest and a domestic cutting area, climbs over a ridge, then descends to the cove. You return the same way, so the ridge is part of the way home too. The round trip gains about 220 m.
At the end, grassy fields meet a pebble beach in a quiet cove, with a view toward Killdevil Mountain. Old machinery and garden plants remain from the settlement. Overnight camping at the primitive campsite requires a permit and registration. Pets must stay leashed; follow any posted area restrictions. Start at the playground in Lomond Campground’s day-use area; a national park entry pass is required.
