Boom and Bust Hike is a 2 km loop from the Wilpena Visitor Centre bushwalking trailhead, following tracks through Pound Gap before curving back to the same complex. Allow about 90 minutes. It suits a gentler walk with more to notice than a short scenic stroll, without the sustained climb of a summit route.

Most of the route is shaded and fairly flat, but the ground is uneven and one short section involves a scramble. Interpretive signs explain how local plants and wildlife handle dry spells; spring also brings wildflowers. The name points to the region's uncertain rain cycle. From 1864 to 1866 no rain fell over the ranges, causing heavy stock losses and local wildlife extinctions. When rain returned, grass spread where saltbush had grown and abandoned runs were reoccupied. It is a useful story to have in mind as the track moves through the scrub.

Look for the Boom and Bust turnoff at the Pound Gap junction; this is also where the longer, steeper Mount Ohlssen-Bagge Hike branches away. Dogs are not permitted in the park. Start at the bushwalking trailhead in the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex, where visitor parking is available.
