Food and useful facilities

There are toilets and showers in three amenities blocks, with laundry in two. The general store sells groceries, firewood and fuel; the same resort precinct has a swimming pool, bar and restaurant that campground guests can use. That’s handy after a long day on park roads, especially if you don’t want to leave the area for basics or dinner.

More about Wilpena Pound Campground

Wilpena Pound Campground is a large, privately operated campground in the Wilpena precinct of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. It sits beside the resort and visitor information centre, separate from the park’s smaller bush campgrounds scattered through the ranges. Pick it if you want to stay inside the park but still have powered and unpowered sites, showers, supplies and somewhere to eat. The broad unpowered area spans about 50 hectares, giving it a bush-camping feel rather than a compact row of pitches.

The campground and its settingDesignated powered and unpowered areas sit in a wooded setting.

Designated powered and unpowered areas sit in a wooded setting. The scale of the unpowered area matters: this is a broad bush-camping ground, rather than a tightly packed strip of sites. Use it as a comfortable base for drives across the ranges. The adjacent visitor information centre can arrange scenic flights over Wilpena Pound and the surrounding landscape if you want to see the full bowl from above.

Arrival and choosing a campThe main road into Wilpena is sealed.

The main road into Wilpena is sealed. April to October is generally more comfortable for walks than the hottest summer months, which can be very hot in the ranges. Dogs aren’t permitted in the national park. Choose this campground when showers, laundry, fuel and food close by matter; if you want a simpler, more remote experience, choose one of the separate park-run bush campgrounds instead.
