Hiking Mount Ohlssen Bagge Hike

The summit hikeMount Ohlssen Bagge is a hard out-and-back from the Wilpena Visitor Centre bushwalking…

Mount Ohlssen Bagge is a hard out-and-back from the Wilpena Visitor Centre bushwalking trailhead to a long, broad rocky ridge above Wilpena Pound. The access-inclusive route measures about 7.2 km return, with roughly 400 metres of climbing, and takes about four hours. The park lists 6.4 km; other published totals range from 5.6 to 7.1 km, so allow for the longer walk from the Visitor Centre. The approach follows paths beside Wilpena Creek into Pound Gap, where the line leaves the shared access and begins the ascent.

The nearby Boom and Bust loop shares the visitor-centre access but is a different walk, with interpretive stops and spring wildflowers. This route goes straight to Mount Ohlssen Bagge and returns over the same ground; the loop is not a lower section of the summit hike. If you want the summit, keep to the Mount Ohlssen Bagge signs at the junction.

The climb above Pound GapThe approach beside Wilpena Creek is comparatively gentle.

The approach beside Wilpena Creek is comparatively gentle. Once the climb branches off, the trail gets steep quickly, with steps, rough rock and loose slopes broken by a few flatter places to pause. It is not a smooth, continuous staircase. Small arrows and markers help in sections where the tread fades into rock, so follow those rather than choosing a tempting line up the hillside. A short scramble near the top asks for deliberate foot placement; on the way down, loose gravel and uneven steps make the same section feel more demanding. The upper slope has little shade, and the climb stays exposed for much of the way.

The route is graded hard for good reason. The distance alone can look manageable, but about 400 metres of ascent over rocky ground makes this a committed half-day walk. Take your time on the descent and leave room for stops; the views begin well before the summit and make a quick push up and down a poor trade.

What you see from the ridgeThe summit is a broad, rocky ridge rather than a tiny point.

The summit is a broad, rocky ridge rather than a tiny point. Views open early and expand as you climb: look back over Wilpena Pound, then outward to St Mary Peak and the surrounding Flinders Ranges. From the top, the rim makes the scale of the basin easier to read. Ikara, the Adnyamathanha name for Wilpena Pound, means “meeting place,” a fitting detail to have in mind as you look across the enclosed landscape. Watch the rocks and scrub for reptiles without stepping off the route.

For a photo, leave some of the broken ridge in the foreground and frame the curved Pound rim with the ranges beyond it. That gives the view a sense of scale and shows the rocky ground you climbed to reach it.

Begin at the bushwalking trailhead in the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex, follow the creek-side access toward Pound Gap, and return the same way after the summit. The hike is closed during summer, normally December through February. Dogs are not permitted in the park.

If a steep, rocky climb is more than you want, choose the separate Boom and Bust Hike instead: it is a roughly 2 km loop with interpretive stops and seasonal wildflowers, and usually takes about an hour and a half. It stays a short nature walk; it does not reach Mount Ohlssen Bagge.
