Hiking Hills Homestead Walk

What the walk includesHills Homestead Walk is a 6.6 km (4.

Hills Homestead Walk is a 6.6 km (4.1 mi) out-and-back from Wilpena Visitor Centre through Pound Gap to the restored stone cottage inside Wilpena Pound. Allow about two hours for the full return. The park calls it easy and the terrain undulating, but there is a choice after the information shelter: Via Sliding Rock keeps to the flatter, shadier creek side; Top Track climbs above the rock and offers views of the Pound peaks. This route follows Top Track to the homestead, then returns by the same corridor. It suits an easy longer walk for the creek scenery and cottage story, rather than someone looking for a high summit.

The walk leaves the visitor-centre area and enters Pound Gap, the natural gateway into the Pound. Wilpena Creek runs beside the early part of the route under tall river red gums and pines; the creek usually carries a little water. The route crosses it and passes a waterhole before reaching the information shelter, the junction for the two approaches. This is the useful decision point: Via Sliding Rock passes between the creek and a large quartzite slab on the flatter option. Top Track rises above Sliding Rock and gives views toward the peaks. Both approaches end at Hills Homestead, so choose the creek-side option for a flatter, shadier walk or Top Track for a climb and a higher look into the Pound. You can complete the full walk on foot without depending on a shuttle.

The destination is modest: a preserved and restored stone cottage, with signs about the early European farming venture inside the Pound. Settlers expected the range’s enclosed bowl to suit crops and stock; harsh conditions defeated that plan. Take time to read the signs rather than treating the homestead as a turnaround marker alone. Toilets and picnic tables are available at the cottage, making it a practical place to rest before the return. No food service was found along the route, so the tables are useful for a snack you bring with you. For a photo, step back far enough to frame the cottage with the nearby gum trees; that captures both the building and its setting.

Practical detailsStart at Wilpena Visitor Centre and park in the visitor area; the walking trailhead is there.

Start at Wilpena Visitor Centre and park in the visitor area; the walking trailhead is there. The park map marks visitor-centre parking, but no separate overflow pattern or lot capacity was documented. The park asks walkers planning outings of three hours or more to enter their details in the Wilpena bushwalkers register; the base two-hour walk is below that threshold. Dogs are not allowed in the park; assistance dogs follow the park’s conditions. If you want a longer climb after the cottage, Wangara Lookout begins behind the homestead. Its separate 600 m steep trail reaches two lookouts; taking that extension makes the outing 7.8 km return from the visitor centre, so treat it as an additional hike rather than part of Hills Homestead Walk.
