St Mary Peak Hike – Ngarri Mudlanha (Outside Trail to Tanderra Saddle) is a 7.3-mile (11.7-kilometre) out-and-back from the Wilpena Visitor Centre bushwalking trailhead to Tanderra Saddle. It follows the Outside Trail and turns around below the culturally significant peak; the summit spur is deliberately outside this route. The 14.6-kilometre, six-hour figure belongs to the longer direct hike that continues toward the peak. This shorter walk ends at the saddle, the destination Adnyamathanha people prefer visitors to choose. Allow about five hours for the return and a proper stop at the view. It is still a substantial outing: several easier kilometres pass before the sustained climb begins.

Start at the signed bushwalking trailhead in the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex and follow the marked approach to the Outside Trail. For the first four-plus kilometres, the route winds through eucalypt woodland and scrub on mostly gentle, undulating ground. This is the shaded lead-in, and it can make the distance feel deceptively easy. The track then turns uphill through red soil and rock, with the gradient and roughness increasing as the trees thin. Views of St Mary Peak and the surrounding ranges open during this climb. Near Tanderra Saddle the footing becomes rocky and uneven, with short scrambling sections; take time to choose each step. The final scramble on the saddle approach is the hardest part of this version.

Where to turn aroundTanderra Saddle gives the high-country view without requiring a summit climb.

Tanderra Saddle gives the high-country view without requiring a summit climb. St Mary Peak is central to Adnyamathanha creation story, and the Adnyamathanha people prefer visitors not climb to its summit. Stop at the saddle and return the same way; the continuation beyond it is not part of this trail. The view is the reward for the long forest approach and the steep upper climb, rather than a reason to press farther. For a photo, include the saddle's rocky ground beneath the ridgeline so the height and shape of St Mary Peak read clearly. The descent retraces the same rocky section, then eases as you return through the woodland.

Plan for the accessRangers recommend starting no later than 9 am, or 10 am during daylight-saving time.

Rangers recommend starting no later than 9 am, or 10 am during daylight-saving time. The route is seasonally closed over summer, roughly from late November to early March, so check the current access notice before planning around it. The approach begins within the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex; follow the signed bushwalking access rather than driving to a different trailhead. A restaurant and general store at nearby Wilpena Pound Resort are useful before or after the walk, but there is no food stop identified along this route. Dogs are not permitted in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. The long approach, rocky climb and scrambles make this a hard hike, not a quick viewpoint walk; choose a shorter Wilpena walk if you want an easier outing.
