More about Wilpena Pound Visitor Information Centre

Start with a planThe Wilpena Pound Visitor Information Centre is the park’s trail-planning hub in the Wilpena…

The Wilpena Pound Visitor Information Centre is the park’s trail-planning hub in the Wilpena Pound Resort precinct. It sits at the head of the walking routes that pass through Pound Gap into the mountainous enclosure, and visitors come here for park information, trail maps and help deciding what to do next. The centre also takes bookings for powered sites and permanent tents at Wilpena Pound Resort. Resort reception and the General Store are close by, so check which counter handles the service you need. The centre is a useful first stop before a walk; the scenery unfolds farther along the tracks.

Follow the creek through Pound GapThe walking route from the centre passes through Pound Gap beside Wilpena Creek.

The walking route from the centre passes through Pound Gap beside Wilpena Creek. River red gums and pines line the creek corridor; farther in, walkers pass a waterhole and information shelter before reaching Hills Homestead. Here the route opens into a choice. Sliding Rock is the flatter, shadier approach; Top Track climbs more steeply and gives views back across the Pound peaks.

At Hills Homestead, a restored stone cottage and interpretive signs tell how early settlers tried to establish a farm for livestock and crops inside the mountain enclosure, then failed. Toilets and picnic tables at the homestead make it a sensible rest stop on a longer outing. They’re along the walking route, rather than inside the visitor-centre building.

Continue to Wangara LookoutsContinue beyond Hills Homestead if the broad view into the Pound is your goal.

Continue beyond Hills Homestead if the broad view into the Pound is your goal. The lower Wangara Lookout is a 6.2-kilometre return walk from the centre; reaching the upper lookout makes it 7 kilometres return. Walking SA grades the hike 4, or hard, and estimates 3 to 3.5 hours. Both viewing platforms face into the Pound. The upper one stands higher and gives a stronger sense of the enclosure’s immense, crater-like shape.

This is a substantial walk, not a quick stroll from the information counter. The lower lookout offers a shorter option; going on to the upper adds distance and height. Set your plan around the route you want, and leave enough time for the walk in both directions.

The park’s walking information recommends collecting additional maps and brochures at the Wilpena Visitor Centre. The centre is also where you can ask about trail details before leaving the precinct. Bookings for the park’s own campgrounds go through the state park booking service; powered sites and permanent tents at the resort can be booked at the centre or resort.

Ikara Restaurant & Bar and the General Store are nearby at the resort. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the store stocks groceries, snacks, souvenirs and basic essentials. These are useful neighbouring facilities rather than services inside the information counter. The road to the resort is sealed and suitable for all vehicles. April to October is the more comfortable walking season, and all park walking trails close on Catastrophic Fire Danger days. Dogs aren’t permitted in the national park.
