#2 of 21 trails in Ikara-Flinders Ranges
Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, SA
A shaded creek walk earns a steep climb to Wilpena Pound views.
Overview
Wangara Lookout Hike is a 7.8 km out-and-back from the Wilpena Visitor Centre bushwalking trailhead to the upper viewing platform, and the full return usually takes about 3½ hours. The walk is part shaded creek approach, part climb along the edge of Wilpena Pound. The upper platform is the bigger finish, but you earn it with a long approach followed by a steep, rough final climb. If you’d rather keep the effort down, stop at the lower platform: that’s still a worthwhile view and cuts the outing to about 7.2 km and 3 hours return.

Trail guide
The route heads from the Visitor Centre into Pound Gap and follows Wilpena Creek beneath river red gums and native pines. This first stretch is shady, with a small waterhole and usually at least a little water in the creek. Creek water isn’t listed as drinking water. You’ll cross the creek before reaching an information shelter. From there, the dirt track climbs above Sliding Rock; there’s also an easier walking path if you’d rather stay on the gentler tread. The gap gradually opens toward the Pound edge. This creekside approach is the pleasant part, but it’s also where much of the distance goes before the climb to the views begins.
Hills Homestead is a preserved stone cottage inside the Pound. Its signs tell the story of an unsuccessful farming venture and the people who tried to make a life here. Toilets and picnic tables make this a sensible place to pause before carrying on. From the homestead, the path passes an Adnyamathanha sculpture and climbs the Pound’s rim toward two viewing platforms.
The lower lookout is about 300 metres beyond the homestead; the upper is another 300 metres farther. Both look inward across Wilpena Pound, a natural basin whose name, Ikara, comes from the local Adnyamathanha people. The final 600 metres of path are steeper and rockier than the creek approach, so take your time on the climb. For a photo, leave some scrub along the bottom of the frame and let the layers of ridges fill the view; that shows the shape of the basin better than sky alone.
Start at the bushwalking trailhead in the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex. There’s no food stop listed on the route, and no confirmed drinking-water source, so bring what you’ll need rather than counting on the creek. The park advises starting by 9 am, or 10 am during daylight saving hours. This hike is closed each December, January and February. Dogs aren’t permitted in the park; assistance dogs are allowed under park rules. The Visitor Centre is the trailhead complex, but specific trail parking or overflow arrangements aren’t published.
