More about Cazneaux Tree

Cazneaux Tree is a landmark river red gum beside Ikara Vari (Wilpena Creek), on the Spirit of Endurance Trail. It is the weathered, hollow tree that Harold Cazneaux photographed in 1937, not a grove or lookout. At about 25 metres tall, it still anchors the open country around the creek. It’s a good stop if landscape photography or local history interests you; if you came for a summit or a long hike, the tree is only one point on a longer walk.

Compare the old viewsCazneaux made three known photographs of the tree and titled them “The Spirit of Endurance.”

Cazneaux made three known photographs of the tree and titled them “The Spirit of Endurance.” Interpretive boards along the route show those images, so you can compare the country he framed with the scene in front of you. The old photographs also show changes in the landscape: the boards point out bullock bush and old native pines, giving you something concrete to look for beyond the tree’s silhouette. Step back from the hollow trunk to see it against the creekside scrub and the Flinders Ranges; a close-up misses why this tree caught his eye. The walk recognizes Adnyamathanha connections to Country, including the ways river red gums have provided food and shelter and the importance of water at Ikara Vari. The name came from George Hunt, Wilpena Station’s last pastoral leaseholder, whose family hosted Cazneaux during the 1937 visit.

Plan the walkThe full Spirit of Endurance Trail is listed as a 90-minute return walk.

The full Spirit of Endurance Trail is listed as a 90-minute return walk. It is a Grade 2 route that does not require bushwalking experience. The route is reached from Flinders Ranges Way and follows Ikara Vari past the tree, so leave time for the boards and creek rather than treating this as a quick roadside photo stop. Trail access can change during fire danger or other park operations; check current park notices before setting out.
