More about SS Emperor Wreck

A boat dive for experienced diversSS Emperor is a 525-foot bulk carrier built in 1910, resting offshore in Lake Superior.

SS Emperor is a 525-foot bulk carrier built in 1910, resting offshore in Lake Superior. It is one of Isle Royale’s named historic wrecks, but it is not a shoreline stop: the visit is a boat-supported scuba dive. Save it for divers with suitable cold-water and deep-dive training, equipment and support.

What remainsThe wreck is largely intact, with most damage at the bow.

The wreck is largely intact, with most damage at the bow. The stern retains its mast, rudder and propeller, engine room and many cabins. The listed bow and stern dive sites range from about 25 to 175 feet, and water below 50 feet can stay around 34–37°F. The stern gives divers the most structure to explore; include a diver beside its mast or machinery for scale, and bring a light for deeper sections where natural light varies.

A consequential lossThe freighter sank in 1947.

The freighter sank in 1947. Its loss was the Great Lakes’ worst disaster since 1942 and the first Lake Superior shipping loss with fatalities since 1940. It was also the most recent large shipwreck at Isle Royale, a hard distinction in a park known for wrecks.

Why ships missed Isle RoyaleStorms and mistaken routes are among the explanations for the island’s high wreck count.

Storms and mistaken routes are among the explanations for the island’s high wreck count. A 1947 newspaper report also described magnetic disturbances affecting steamer compasses nearby. That is a period explanation, not definitive proof of the Emperor’s cause.

Plan the diveRegister each diver at Rock Harbor, Windigo or Houghton before entering the water, then return…

Register each diver at Rock Harbor, Windigo or Houghton before entering the water, then return the permit afterward. The dive site or boat must display a diver-down flag, and divers at the surface must stay within 100 feet of it. Isle Royale has no facilities for filling dive cylinders, so arrange air beforehand. Lake Superior weather changes quickly and emergency help is remote. The wreck and its artifacts are protected: leave them in place. The park also requires dive gear to be rinsed in warm chlorinated tap water and dried for seven days before diving, to prevent invasive-species spread. Confirm current mooring status before departure; the available buoy information was inconsistent.
