Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre

Overview

Sitting directly across from the Athabasca Glacier on the Icefields Parkway, the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre is the region’s all-in-one base camp. It’s where you book glacier and Skywalk tours, browse interpretive exhibits, grab a meal, and soak up those huge glacier-and-peak views from the building and patios.

Wildlife

The centre itself is busy, but keep an eye on surrounding slopes and along the Parkway: mountain goats and bighorn sheep are sometimes spotted near the Skywalk area, and bears are occasionally seen along the corridor. Always view from a distance and never feed wildlife.

• It’s popular—expect lines for tickets, shuttles, and food in summer.
• Services are seasonal: the main operating window is roughly mid-April to mid-October; winter is typically closed.
• There’s no gas station here; arrive fueled and provisioned for the drive.

• Aim for early morning or late afternoon to beat tour-bus rushes and get softer light on the glacier.
• Midday brings the biggest crowds and the harshest glare for photography.
• Hours vary by season; check day-of before you commit your schedule.
