Maligne Pass Trail

Maligne Pass is a remote, rugged 48 km (29.8 mile) one-way backcountry traverse from the Poboktan Creek trailhead near Sunwapta Station on the Icefields Parkway to the trailhead at the end of Maligne Lake Road. It is a point-to-point route, not a loop or an out-and-back; arrange a vehicle shuttle before starting. Most parties take 2–3 days and need a backcountry permit and reserved campsites for an overnight trip.

From the Poboktan trailhead, the route climbs about 6 km along Poboktan Creek to the Maligne Pass junction, then continues up the Poligne Valley. It crosses Poligne Creek repeatedly on small bridges and reaches Avalanche Campground after about 11 km. Roughly 4 km farther, the trail reaches Maligne Pass and an alpine lake. Beyond the pass, it descends to the Maligne River, where fords lead to Mary Vaux Campground, then continues through forest and willow meadows past Schäffer and Trapper Creek campgrounds to the Maligne Lake Road trailhead. The mapped route follows this complete visitor traverse, including the required approach from Poboktan Creek and the final Maligne Valley exit.

Expect a low-priority, faint and sometimes boggy trail with deadfall, muddy ground, washed-out bridges, and multiple river fords. High-elevation snow can linger late into the season, and conditions can change quickly. The pass and open meadows are scenic but exposed. Carry navigation tools, waterproof footwear, and bear spray, and use conservative judgment at all crossings. Dogs, bicycles, and horses are not permitted.
