Park at the signed Sunwapta Falls lot off the Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93). The Lower Sunwapta Falls trail branches before the main viewing bridge at the upper falls.
Edges are exposed and slick from mist; do not cross railings. Stay on the same side of the river as the parking lot for the lower falls. Expect ice in winter and check avalanche conditions. This is active bear and moose habitat—carry bear spray and keep pets leashed.
Why go
If you only peek over the bridge at Upper Sunwapta Falls, you’re missing the best part. This short trail follows the rim of a narrow, dramatic canyon to the gentler, multi‑tiered Lower Sunwapta Falls—quieter, more intimate, and far less crowded than the upper viewpoints.
Route and distance
From the Sunwapta Falls parking area, find the signed Lower Sunwapta Falls path before the main bridge. Stay on the same side of the river as the parking lot; crossing the bridge leads to a different, much longer backcountry route. It’s an easy out‑and‑back of about 1.6 miles total (2.6 km) with a gentle descent on the way out and a modest climb back.
What you’ll see
Right away you’ll hear (and feel) the power of the upper falls as glacial water funnels through a tight limestone gorge. The canyon walk delivers multiple viewpoints into the churning slot below, then eases into a calmer forested stretch before the lower falls—a lovely series of drops framed by subalpine forest and river-polished rock. It’s prime photography, especially when you catch misty light angling into the gorge.
Trail feel and crowds
The path is well‑marked and suitable for most visitors, but expect some slippery sections near the water and in shaded spots after rain. Most people stop at the upper platforms; continue downcanyon for more space and better atmosphere. This is a high‑reward walk with minimal effort.
Natural notes
“Sunwapta” comes from the Stoney word for “turbulent water,” an apt description of the river carving this canyon as it races toward the Athabasca. Glaciers sculpted these valleys thousands of years ago, leaving hanging‑valley topography that helps create the dramatic falls and deep gorge. The surrounding forest is recovering from the 1967 Chaba River wildfire, which opened habitat that’s good for wildlife—carry bear spray and stay alert.
Best time to hike
Spring through fall is ideal. Mid‑ to late spring and summer bring peak flow and the biggest drama; autumn trades volume for golden foliage and thinner crowds. Winter can be beautiful and quiet, but expect ice—bring traction and check conditions, including avalanche advisories, before you go. For photos and fewer people, aim for early morning or late afternoon.
Safety and tips
- Do not cross safety railings and mind the canyon edge; mist makes rock and dirt slick.
- Stay on the parking‑lot side of the river for the lower falls; don’t cross the bridge if your goal is the canyon walk.
