Park at the signed Sunwapta Falls lot off the Icefields Parkway; the Lower Canyon trail departs from the lot on the same side of the river—do not cross the bridge.

Skip the mob at the upper viewpoint and follow the canyon downstream to a far calmer, more intimate set of waterfalls. From the Sunwapta Falls parking lot, stay on the same side of the river and do not cross the bridge—this signed path is the Lower Canyon route. It starts on pavement, then becomes packed dirt with roots as it winds through subalpine forest along the canyon rim.
It’s an easy out-and-back of about 2.6 km (1.6 miles) total with roughly 80 m of elevation—gently downhill on the way out, a steady climb back. Plan on 1–1.5 hours with photo stops. The payoff is a series of lower falls stacked in a tight gorge, with multiple viewpoints and far fewer people than the upper platform.
Expect well-marked trail and classic canyon scenery: churning, glacially fed water squeezing through limestone narrows before relaxing into a boulder-strewn river below the last falls. You may hear birds and should practice bear awareness—this stretch is quieter and wildlife moves through.
Want the signature “stacked falls” angle? Some hikers make a short, optional scramble down a steep, potentially slick bank near the end—only if you’re confident on loose dirt and roots. Otherwise, stick to the main overlooks; the drops and fast water are no joke.
Best time: late spring through early fall, when snowmelt swells the river and the trail is clear. Early or late in the day dodges tour-bus crowds and harsh light. Winter is possible, but expect ice and consider avalanche conditions.
Bottom line: if you’re stopping at Sunwapta anyway, this extension is a high‑reward, low‑effort add-on that trades crowds for canyon drama.
