Jumbo Rocks Campground

Jumbo Rocks is a campground on Park Boulevard in the central part of Joshua Tree, with 124 individual and family sites set among rounded granite boulders and desert shrubs. Book here for the chance to sleep inside the rock formations, with room to wander around camp and dark desert skies overhead. Reservations are required year-round, so choose a specific site before you arrive.

The campground has several paved-road loops, but the spaces themselves vary. Each site has its own parking area, picnic table and fire ring; some have room for just one vehicle. Check the individual site details before booking, especially if you’re bringing an RV or need space for more than one car. The usual limit is six people and three tents, with two cars only when the site has room.

There’s no potable water, showers or hookups, and no staffed store, ice or firewood for sale. Bring your water and supplies with you. Vault toilets and trash and recycling collection are available. Fires belong in the designated rings or grills, subject to current park restrictions, and food and scented items need to be secured from wildlife.

The boulders aren’t just a dramatic backdrop. USGS points to Jumbo Rocks as an example of spheroidal weathering: water alters minerals inside granite, and outer layers gradually peel away, leaving rounded masses. Look closely at the smooth curves and layers as you move through camp; the rock shapes are part of the place’s geology.

Stargazing is one of the pleasures of staying here, and several hiking routes leave from the campground, including a short interpretive nature trail. The sites are popular and can feel close together, so privacy and noise depend partly on which site and neighbors you get. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
