Old Weir Bridge

Old Weir Bridge is a small, twin-arched stone bridge over the fast channel beside Dinis Cottage, at the Meeting of the Waters on the Muckross Peninsula. It’s believed to date to the 16th century and is one of Killarney’s oldest structures. Make the detour if old stonework and the lake channels sound more interesting than another stop at a viewpoint.

The bridge crosses a fast-moving channel linking the lakes. Boat tours sometimes pass through the rapids beneath its arches; the water level and the boat crew’s judgement decide when that’s possible. If one comes through, the current is as much of the show as the bridge.

The exact construction date isn’t known. It was already shown in disrepair in a 1780 print, and it survived the major 1867 flood that washed away Dinis Cottage and other wooden structures nearby. That gives the arches a longer story than their modest size suggests.

For the photo, get the two arches and the moving water in the same frame. A low view along the channel makes the current part of the picture; use an established, safe spot rather than scrambling down a wet bank.
