Overview
Cedar Grove Overlook is a rocky perch high above the canyon, delivering a big-payoff view across Cedar Grove and out to the High Sierra. It’s earned a local reputation as a stellar sunset spot—and it’s usually quieter than the marquee river hikes.
The Hike
Reach it via the Hotel Creek Trail: roughly 4.4 miles roundtrip with about 1,620–1,650 feet of elevation gain. Expect “switchbacks on switchbacks” (around 33 of them) and a steady grade. You’ll pass a junction for the Lewis Creek connector, then a signed junction for the overlook near ~1.8 miles; from there it’s a short up-and-down to the viewpoint. The overlook sits roughly 1,400 feet above the canyon floor.
What You’ll See
From the top, you get a sweeping panorama over Cedar Grove’s granite-walled canyon and the surrounding high country. Late-day light warms the cliffs and the river corridor below, making this a particularly photogenic finish to a hard-earned climb.
Conditions and Safety
This route crosses the 2024 Happy Fire footprint—downed trees and tread damage are possible. Don’t linger under burned snags. The trail is sunny and exposed; it gets hot in summer. Bring serious sun protection, grippy footwear, and plenty of water. Black bears live here; give wildlife space and secure all food. Bear spray is not permitted in the park. Pets are not allowed on any park trails.
Getting There and Parking
The Hotel Creek Trailhead is essentially behind Cedar Grove Lodge, off Highway 180. Parking is limited; if the small lot is full, use lodge parking, which adds a short walk. There’s no restroom or potable water at the trailhead—take care of needs in Cedar Grove Village before you start.
Seasonal Access
The road into Cedar Grove (Highway 180) is typically open from the fourth Friday in April to the second Monday in November. Outside that window, the area is closed to vehicle access.
Best Time to Visit
Start at first light to beat the heat, or aim for late afternoon to catch golden-hour and sunset from the top—just pack a headlamp for the descent. Weekends see more activity in the canyon overall, but this trail often remains relatively mellow compared to river-side favorites.
Alternatives
On hot days or if you want less exposure, consider Mist Falls or a mellow walk at Zumwalt Meadow and the scenic byway pullouts along the Kings River.
