Kings Canyon Overlook

Kings Canyon Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Generals Highway, south of Grant Grove. From the rocky pullout, you look across forested ridges and canyon country. It makes an easy few-minute stop while you’re already on the highway; there’s no approach hike to reach the viewpoint. Trees can screen parts of the distant panorama, so don’t count on seeing the canyon bottom.

The mountains here were pushed up by plate tectonics, then water and ice cut the canyons into them. That’s the bigger story behind the layered ridges you can see from the turnout. For a photo, include the pale rock at the overlook edge beneath the darker tree line; it gives the wide view a clear foreground.

There’s parking beside the viewpoint, and it’s listed as wheelchair accessible. Traffic moves quickly along this stretch of Generals Highway and visibility is limited, so take care entering the pullout and rejoining the road.
