Buena Vista Peak Trail

Overview

A quick win with a big payoff. Buena Vista Peak is a 2.0-mile round-trip out-and-back with about 400 feet of gain that tops out on a granite dome at 7,603 feet. It’s generally easy-to-moderate: short, a bit steep in spots, and absolutely worth it for the 360-degree views of Redwood Canyon, the Kings Canyon high country, the Sierra Crest/Great Western Divide, and Monarch Divide. On exceptionally clear days, you may even glimpse the San Joaquin Valley to the southwest.

The Experience

From the trailhead, you’ll meander through mixed conifer forest before the terrain opens to granite slabs and boulder gardens. Near the top, the path crosses slickrock where the tread can fade; expect a few use paths and a key 180-degree right turn on the final approach. The summit is broad and ringed by boulders—wander a bit to find your favorite vantage. It’s breezy up here, often cooler than the trail, and far less crowded than headline viewpoints, making it a solid alternative if you’re skittish about heights on places like Moro Rock.

What You’ll See

Panoramas are the headline, but look down, too: in late spring and early summer you may find wildflowers (including sand-loving “pussypaws”) tucked into granite pockets. Lizards zip across warm rock, and exfoliation layers on the dome make the geology pop.

Best Times to Hike

Year-round on paper, but summer and fall deliver the most reliable footing. Winter and early spring can bring snow and icy patches—traction may be helpful. Midday brings heat and minimal shade; early morning or late afternoon keeps temps reasonable and lighting dramatic. Sunrise and sunset are fantastic here, but bring a headlamp and be extra mindful of route-finding on the slabs in low light. Note that haze or wildfire smoke can occasionally mute those big views.

Logistics and Tips

Trailhead parking is a small paved turnout on the Generals Highway, almost directly across from the Kings Canyon Overlook. The lot is flat but has no designated accessible spaces; overflow parking is available across the road at the overlook. There are no toilets or water—pack what you need. Pets aren’t allowed on park trails. Because the path fades on granite near the top, download an offline map or GPS track, and mentally mark key turns on the way up to make the descent simple. Grippy footwear, sun protection, and a light wind layer for the summit make this already-easy outing even smoother.
