Start at Haverthwaite Station for a gentle heritage-rail outing through the Leven Valley. Steam locomotives haul traditional 1950s carriages along the surviving 3.5-mile branch to Lakeside, at the southern end of Windermere; the return trip takes about 50 minutes, or you can connect with Windermere Lake Cruises and continue by boat. The Victorian station is part of the visit: look into the working engine shed, browse the gift shop, and let children use the woodland play area. A short woodland walk and picnic area give non-riders something to do, while the platform tea room serves light meals and drinks. The station is beside the A590 near Newby Bridge and has a pay-and-display car park; use Haverthwaite Station, LA12 8AL, as the navigation destination. The platform and tea room are accessible and accessible parking is provided, but the woodland walk is steep and not suitable for wheelchairs. The railway runs seasonally, and train/boat connections require planning, so check the current timetable before you go. The line dates to 1869, while today's heritage operation began in 1973.
