Parking

Parking is available at Lane Ends off the Old Road near Haverthwaite. The route can also be joined from the railway station, Whitewater Hotel, Linsty Green, or Abbots Reading Farm, but those starts change the walk.

Best time to go

Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours at an ordinary walking pace, with stops. It is moderate rather than strenuous, but the footing makes it more work than the distance suggests. Paths can be muddy and uneven, and the route includes a small amount of road walking. Woodland cover gives shade, while the clearest views arrive on the higher edges and open fields.

Safety

Expect rough dirt paths, mud, uneven ground, and a few steep sections. The long version crosses fields and passes a working farm, so close gates and keep dogs under close control. There is some road walking, and wet weather makes the footing less forgiving.

This is the long Greenwood Trail 2 route, a roughly 3-mile woodland circuit with an out-and-back spur to Abbots Reading Farm. The 4.8 km figure is the complete walk, including the farm detour and return, rather than just the wooded section.

From the Haverthwaite Heights area, rough dirt paths climb through the woodland, pass old stonework and a restored bark-peeler's hut, then open into fields and farm lanes on the Abbots Reading spur. Expect a few short steep rises and viewpoints through the trees rather than a single big summit panorama. The mapped line includes the physical route to the farm and back, so the same short section appears twice.

When to goSpring through autumn gives the best contrast of leaf cover and open-field views.

Spring through autumn gives the best contrast of leaf cover and open-field views. Winter can make the rough paths especially wet and slippery, but the bare trees improve sightlines to the surrounding landscape. Early or late in the day is usually better for quieter paths and softer light. Keep to the public path through fields and close gates behind you.

Red and roe deer are worth watching for in the woods and fields, and red squirrels may be seen, though neither is guaranteed. Dogs are allowed on ordinary public access, but keep them close and on a lead around livestock.
