Overview

About Stott Park Bobbin Mill

Why stop

  • Original machinery still makes the visit feel alive
  • A compact industrial-history stop with a useful High Dam walk nearby

Heads up

  • Access depends on a booked tour
  • Steep stairs and uneven, slippery ground limit the experience
Stott Park is the only surviving Lakeland bobbin mill, and it is still a working museum rather than a quiet shell. On the guided tour, you can watch staff turn timber into wooden bobbins on original belt-driven machinery. The mill was built in 1835 to supply the Lancashire textile industry, so the visit connects a very specific local landscape to the factories that once depended on it.

Access and tradeoffs

The ground floor of the mill is wheelchair accessible, but the upper floor is reached by steep wooden stairs and there is no lift. Paths are sloping and uneven, with trip and slip hazards when wet. There are three designated accessible spaces in the lower car park about 50 metres from the entrance; the upper car park is farther away. Toilets, picnic tables, the exhibition, and a small shop are available during guided tours. There is no cafe on site, so bring a drink or picnic if you plan to stay in the grounds.

The machinery is the star: lathes, saws, shafts, belts, and the steam engine make the production process easy to understand when they are running. The Drying Barn has a permanent exhibition, and the grounds include about four acres of woodland beside the mill. The site also has a pond and stream, so this is a tactile, working industrial-history stop rather than just a collection of displays.

The mill survived by adapting. As demand for bobbins fell, it made other turned-wood products including reels, tool handles, and duffle-coat toggles before finally closing in 1971. It reopened to visitors as a working mill in 1983.

Visits are built around a guided tour on selected days, and booking ahead is important. Tours start promptly, so arrive for the time on your booking. The machinery is indoors, making the mill a useful wet-weather stop, while the woodland and sloping grounds are more comfortable after a dry spell. If you want to make a fuller outing of it, the mill links naturally with the High Dam and Finsthwaite walk; the circular route from Lakeside is about 4 miles and can be started from the mill.
