Rusland Pool: The Gunpowder Tramway Walk

Overview

About Rusland Valley and Yewbarrow

This is the long version, 13.7 km / 8.5 miles, walked as a lollipop-style out-and-back: one outward corridor through valley fields and woodland, an open-fell loop at the top, then the same lower corridor back. Reckon on 300 m of cumulative ascent and typically 4 to 5 hours. Decide before you set off that this is the distance you want, because the return uses the same lower ground.

Why go

  • Old gunpowder tramway and local industrial history
  • Quiet valley, woodland and open fell variety

Heads up

  • Tidal section can be impassable
  • Limited parking and a steep climb

From the valley floor, the path picks up the line of an old horse-drawn tramway that once linked the Black Beck gunpowder works (1860 to 1928) with the Furness Railway. Fields beside the tidal river lead into woodland and farmland around Crook Farm, Crooks Bridge and Great Ellerside, with a steep ascent to Rusland Heights. A 100 m boardwalk crosses Border Moss, and the Yewbarrow woods hold ancient yew trees.

Mixed ground: pasture, woodland paths, quiet lanes and short road sections, boardwalk, and open fell. The woodland stretches bring repeated small ups and downs, and the pull up to Rusland Heights is steep enough to feel. Treat it as a solid moderate to hard day rather than a stroll. Wear proper boots and carry waterproofs, and expect the open fell to be exposed to wind and weather.

A section beside Rusland Pool is tidal and can be impassable. This is a recurring feature of the route rather than a rare event, so plan around the tide, and be prepared to turn back or reroute instead of wading.

The heights give panoramic views over the Rusland Valley, which is the main reward for the longer distance. Primroses come through in spring, making late spring a good time to walk it. By the tidal river you may see cormorants and egrets, and honey buzzard has been reported nesting in the area in summer, though no sighting is guaranteed. Ticks are present, so cover legs and check yourself and dogs afterwards.

Access, parking and facilitiesThe main start is the former Rusland Pool Hotel, LA12 8AA.

The main start is the former Rusland Pool Hotel, LA12 8AA. The route can also be joined from points near local roads, but roadside pull-offs typically hold only one or two cars, so arrive early and park considerately. Any refreshments or toilets at the former hotel were only ever conditional, so do not rely on facilities here: carry everything you need for the day, including your own food and drink.

Keep them under close control around livestock, and on open-access land keep them on a lead of no more than 2 m from 1 March to 31 July. Note that this Yewbarrow is a wooded valley-side area on this route and is not the steep Yewbarrow summit in Wasdale.

Worth the day if you like industrial heritage, ancient trees and quiet valley walking, and if you are happy with a broad valley viewpoint rather than a dramatic summit. Anyone wanting a big fell top, easy parking or on-site facilities should look elsewhere.
