This is the waymarked Elterwater Trail walking and cycling route, a linear point-to-point crossing that starts in Coniston and finishes in Elterwater. The stored distance is the one-way corridor: 6.23 miles (10.03 km), with an official time of about 3.5 hours and an official grade of Easy. The return is by the same route, so a there-and-back day on foot is closer to 12.46 miles and a much bigger commitment than the headline number suggests.

Leaving Coniston you work out past Tilberthwaite Farm and under the Yewdale fells, then swing through classic slate country into Little Langdale, where the old clapper crossing of Slater's Bridge is the set-piece of the walk. The last stretch drops into Elterwater village. It is a valley crossing rather than a summit day, but the broad fell views open up repeatedly, and the mix of working farmland, quarried stone and historic packhorse-era crossings gives it more character than its modest height suggests.

Easy in the sense of no scrambling and no sustained climbing, but the official description is honest that the route is hilly and rough in places. Sampled elevations along the corridor sit between roughly 61 and 175 metres, ending near 69 metres, so expect steady undulation rather than flat ground. Surfaces switch between minor road, bridleway and rougher stone and loose sections. Trainers with no grip will feel wrong on the rocky parts; wear proper walking shoes or boots.

Waymarkers cover the route, which takes most of the guesswork out of it, but pay attention where bridleways meet minor roads and at farm access points, since those junctions are where people drift onto the wrong line. Keep a map or offline track running if you are new to the Coniston and Little Langdale lanes, and note that several other Elterwater walks share ground near the village end.

Park in Coniston Village and start from there, which also sets you up for the walk in the intended direction. Coniston is served by the 505 bus, which runs frequently and makes the one-way version genuinely practical if you can plan a return leg by bus rather than walking back.

DogsDogs are welcome on the public footpaths and bridleways used here.

Dogs are welcome on the public footpaths and bridleways used here. Keep yours under close control or on a short lead, especially around livestock on the farmland sections and where the route is shared with cyclists and other walkers on narrow bridleway stretches.

The main drawbackThere is no loop.

There is no loop. Unless you arrange transport at one end, you are walking the same ground twice for a total near 12.5 miles, which turns a pleasant crossing into a full day. If you want the scenery without the mileage, the separate low-level Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge walk is shorter and gentler, and it is a different route from this one.
