A circular loop of 3.25 km (2 miles) that starts and finishes at the Dodd Wood car park. Reckon on around 86 m of climbing and roughly 45 to 50 minutes of walking, longer if you stop at the viewpoints.

From the car park the yellow waymarkers lead north through a mix of conifer and broadleaved woodland, then bring you across Sandbed Gill, the quiet highlight of the route. Beyond the crossing the trees open up enough for views toward the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake, and the return leg drops back through semi-natural and mixed woodland to where you started.

Difficulty and footingEasy to moderate for a short walk.

Easy to moderate for a short walk. The surface is a mixture of forest roads and surfaced footpaths, but sections are steep, narrow and uneven, and the ground near the gill can stay damp underfoot. Wear shoes with grip rather than anything you mind getting muddy.

The appeal here is close-up woodland rather than big open fells: moss and ferns crowding the stream, tall conifers, and glimpses of the lake through the trees. Red squirrels live in these woods, and Bassenthwaite is known for its ospreys, so keep your eyes up and your voice down. Neither is guaranteed on any given visit.

  • If you want wide panoramas instead of woodland close-ups, the Dodd Summit Trail is a much steeper 6.5 km circuit to the 502 m top. That is a harder day out, not an extension of this one.
