Parking

Use Dodd Wood car park on the A591, opposite Mirehouse, near Keswick. The forest entrance is on the right when approaching from Keswick. The trail starts from the car park access; toilets and a picnic area are at the car park.

Best time to go

Autumn is the standout for woodland colour. Clear, settled days are the ones to pick if you care about the lake views, and after heavy rain expect a wetter, slicker path. For photography, early and late light works best on the higher, more open stretches where the lake opens up below you.

Safety

The climb is steep, with narrow and uneven sections, and the beck-side paths can be slippery when wet. Follow the red waymarkers, and keep dogs under control near the beck and other visitors.

Hiking Skill Beck Trail at Dodd Wood

The shape of the walkThis is a complete closed loop of 2.5 km (1.5 miles), waymarked in red and graded moderate.

This is a complete closed loop of 2.5 km (1.5 miles), waymarked in red and graded moderate. From the car park the trail climbs steadily through the forest on woodland tracks, crosses Skill Beck, then follows the beck and narrower paths back down to where you started. No retracing, no guesswork, just keep the red markers in sight.

How hard it actually isShort mileage, real effort.

Short mileage, real effort. The climb starts early and keeps going, and most people should allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to do the loop comfortably with stops. It is honest work rather than a stroll, so treat it as a proper hill walk in miniature and take the ascent at whatever pace suits you. Anyone who wants a flat riverside amble will find this steeper than the numbers suggest.

You get a mix of forest roads, surfaced footpaths and compacted tracks, with some narrower, uneven sections where the path tightens up. Boots or grippy trainers make more sense than anything smooth soled. In wet weather the route can be damp and slippery, especially on the steeper ground and near the beck.

The payoff is the outlook over Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells as you gain height, best when conditions are clear. Lower down, the beck itself is the character of the walk, and it is the same water that supplies the Old Sawmill tearoom and Mirehouse. Red squirrels are present in Dodd Wood through the year, so it is worth pausing quietly where the canopy is busy, though sightings are luck rather than a certainty.

Access and practicalitiesStart from Dodd Wood car park on the A591 opposite Mirehouse, near Keswick.

There are toilets and a picnic area at the car park, and dogs are welcome on the trail. Park facilities can run to seasonal schedules, so plan your refreshments rather than counting on them.
