About Tom Weir Statue

Why stop

  • Memorable memorial with picnic seating and bay views

Heads up

  • Balmaha parking fills quickly on warm weekends
Tom Weir Statue is a bronze memorial beside Balmaha Bay at Weir's Rest, a small picnic area between the loch and the Oak Tree Inn. It's an easy, worthwhile pause if you're already in Balmaha or walking the West Highland Way; the statue, stone wall, benches and bay make it feel like more than a photo prop.

“You're approaching Balmaha, the village departure point for boats to Inchcailloch across Loch Lomond. I'd choose the island if you want a boat ride, quiet woodland and a hilltop view in one half-day.”

More about Tom Weir Statue

The story and the viewTom Weir was the climber, writer and broadcaster behind Weir's Way, the Scottish television…

Tom Weir was the climber, writer and broadcaster behind Weir's Way, the Scottish television series that took him into the outdoors. Sean Hedges-Quinn's sculpture was unveiled on 29 December 2014, marking the centenary of Weir's birth; the memorial appeal also helped turn the old picnic spot into Weir's Rest. Read the storyboards, then look across Balmaha Bay toward Loch Lomond and Inchcailloch. For the best photo, frame the statue against the water rather than shooting it tight against the wall; the boats and wooded shore give it a real sense of place.

Making it workReach it from Balmaha's village and lochside paths.

Reach it from Balmaha's village and lochside paths. Parking can fill quickly on warm weekends, with overflow parking nearby. Picnic tables and benches make this a useful pause. The Oak Tree Inn is close by for a pub meal, coffee, a shop or ice cream, and St Mocha is another nearby coffee and ice-cream stop. The Visitor Centre is nearby for toilets and trip information. Continue on the West Highland Way or make Balmaha your starting point for Conic Hill if you want a longer walk.
