Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre is a compact, family-run falconry attraction in the loch-side woodland beside Loch Lomond Shores at Balloch. It is home to more than 30 birds of prey and owls representing 26 species, including all five British owl species and Orla, a Golden Eagle. Come for the close-range flying display, not for a full-day zoo: the collection is compact, but the birds and the staff’s explanations make this a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in wildlife, especially families.

The route is mostly outdoors, with aviaries and bird accommodation around a managed woodland flying area. Kestrels, falcons, hawks, owls and eagles fly close to the audience, sometimes overhead, while handlers talk through their behaviour, biology and conservation. One demonstration shows a hawk pursuing an imitation prey lure. The centre also has an indoor education cabin and gift shop, so the visit has somewhere to turn when you need a break from the weather. Allow roughly an hour and a half for the collection and one display; the same-day re-entry wristband makes it easy to combine with other Loch Lomond Shores attractions.

Why it feels differentThe centre opened in 2004 and moved to its current Loch Lomond Shores site in 2012.

The centre opened in 2004 and moved to its current Loch Lomond Shores site in 2012. Its work is not just display: the centre describes rescue, rehabilitation and public education as part of its mission, and the setting is designed to keep the flying area feeling like woodland rather than a stage. Try to watch one full display rather than treating it as a quick animal-house stop. For photos, use the woodland behind the birds as context and follow the action during the close passes; the best pictures come from the proximity and movement, not from a distant cage portrait.

Displays are seasonal and weather-dependent, so check the current schedule before building your day around one; late entry to a show is not allowed once it begins. The attraction is beside the cycle path on the car-park side of Loch Lomond Shores, and Balloch’s train and bus stations are about a ten-minute walk away. It is fully accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking frames, with dedicated space in the flying area. Dogs are not permitted. Use the shared Loch Lomond Shores car park; the main complex has toilets, but food and drinking-water provision inside the centre was not confirmed.
