The ship was prefabricated in Glasgow, dismantled, sent to Balloch by rail and reassembled on this slipway because Loch Lomond has no navigable route from the sea. She carried up to 1,000 passengers during 28 seasons on the loch before being withdrawn in 1981. Today you can see the vessel, the museum cabin's shipbuilding displays and the Winch House, where the original winding gear still explains how steamers were hauled out for repair. When the machinery is fired for an In Steam demonstration, the noise, heat and slow pull of the winch make the engineering much easier to understand than a panel ever could.
