More about RSPB Loch Lomond Nature Hub

A reserve with a proper loch finishRSPB Loch Lomond is a 237-hectare nature reserve on the south-east shore of Loch Lomond, near…

RSPB Loch Lomond is a 237-hectare nature reserve on the south-east shore of Loch Lomond, near the River Endrick mouth, with the Nature Hub at High Wards Farm as its starting point. It is a better choice for a varied half-day wander than a quick drive-by: the reserve strings together grassland, fen, native oak woodland, wetlands and a real loch shore, with trails from 200 m to 1.5 km. Keep it if you want birds and habitats as well as a big view.

Follow the route to Net BayStart at the hub and choose between short options or the longer walk.

Start at the hub and choose between short options or the longer walk. The 950 m Airey Woodland Trail and 200 m Viewpoint Trail stay close to the visitor facilities. The 1.3 km Lomond Trail crosses meadow and a long fen boardwalk, passes through Ring Wood, and reaches Net Bay at the loch. A bridge over a burn and the change from open fen to woodland make it feel like a proper little expedition rather than a single viewpoint. The shore opens towards Inchcailloch and Conic Hill, with Ben Lomond beyond.

The Shore Wood Path continues for 1.5 km, but it is the roughest part of the reserve and can be overgrown in summer. There is no path onto the beach, so the longer route is about the shoreline and the view, not getting down to the water. For the photo, use the Net Bay shore to frame Loch Lomond with the hills and islands beyond.

Look for the wetland storyThe reserve's value is in the mix of habitats.

The reserve's value is in the mix of habitats. Loch Lomond was recognised as a Ramsar wetland in 1976 for its fenland plants, marshes, woodlands and geese. Spring brings woodland birds and bluebells; summer is the season for meadow insects and fishing ospreys; autumn and winter bring migrant and wintering waterfowl, including Greenland white-fronted geese. Seven Eurasian beavers were reintroduced here in 2023 to reshape wetland habitat, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Make it workDrive from the A811 between Drymen and Balloch, and search for RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond in…

Drive from the A811 between Drymen and Balloch, and search for RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond in your mapping app rather than relying on the reserve postcode. The current facilities include 30 parking spaces, two accessible spaces, an accessible toilet, a Changing Places toilet and picnic benches with wheelchair spaces. Pushchairs work on the supported routes; the shore path and beach are less even. Assistance dogs are welcome, and other dogs should stay on paths and under close control. No current café offering is listed, so bring food if you plan to linger. The longer shore route earns the view but is the least even part of the visit.
