Carbon River Ranger Station

This is the only ranger station in Mount Rainier's northwest corner, housed in a remodeled farmhouse about two miles outside the Carbon River Entrance. Stop for park information, maps, or help with wilderness-camping and climbing permits when staff are there. It is a practical information stop, not a viewpoint, and the remote approach can be disrupted, so check current conditions before heading out.

The main room has an information desk and fireplace, with displays and video about the Carbon River area's natural and cultural history, plus maps and books. The building is historic, but park materials don't give its construction date or original occupants; the farmhouse itself is the story that's supported. Staffing varies, so check ahead if you need in-person permit help.

The Carbon River takes its name from coal deposits in the area. The valley's high rainfall supports plant communities that resemble temperate rainforest. The road into the park was built in the 1920s and repeatedly damaged by floods. After the major 2006 flood, the in-park section closed to vehicles and became a trail. The ranger station is outside the entrance, before that trail begins.

There is a small parking area and wheelchair access, but no public restroom in the station. Restrooms and picnic tables are at the Carbon River Entrance farther along the approach. No food service is listed at the station, so plan food separately.
