Silver Forest Trail

Silver Forest Trail is an easy walk from the south side of Sunrise’s upper parking lot. It descends through subalpine meadows, reaches the Emmons Vista overlooks, then continues east across an old burn area. Allow about 1 to 1½ hours for the mapped maintained route. That line measures just under a mile one way, or about 1.9 miles round trip, with small ups and downs and roughly 150 feet of gain. Published mileage also appears as 1.6 miles, so use the maintained-trail marker as your turnaround. A rougher footpath continues beyond it toward a ridge rock; that extra section is outside this route.

The two overlooks sit above the White River Valley, with Mount Rainier and Emmons Glacier across the view. Interpretive panels describe the mountain and glacier; the second also explains the Osceola Mudflow and how it reshaped the landscape. If you want a shorter outing, the overlooks alone make a half-mile round trip from the trailhead.

Past the overlooks, the route crosses an open, south-facing slope with scattered trees and a few gentle rises and dips. Fire cleared this area decades ago, and trees grow slowly at this elevation. “Silver” refers to the pale trunks of subalpine firs and whitebark pines. Mid-to-late July is the usual wildflower peak; fall color can begin in September. Deer, mountain goats, marmots, golden-mantled ground squirrels and birds are among the wildlife seen in the Sunrise meadows, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Find the Emmons Vista trailhead on the south side of the upper Sunrise lot. Restrooms, the visitor center and day lodge are at Sunrise, not along the trail; food service was not listed. Sunrise Road is seasonal and typically open from July through September. Pets are prohibited on park trails, and staying on the tread protects the fragile meadow plants.
