Guide
White River Campground is a developed drive-in campground at the end of White River Road, in a deep, evergreen-covered canyon on Mount Rainier’s east side below Sunrise. Its 88 sites are arranged in four loops, A through D. Some sites at the far end of Loop D sit beside the White River, and the Wonderland Trail passes through the campground.
The campground works well if you want to start hiking without driving back down the mountain. The Wonderland Trail crosses the grounds, and access to Glacier Basin Trail is near the amphitheater and far end of Loop D. The picnic area is separate from the campsites, with tables and a short path toward the river.
The White River runs beside the campground and gives the place its name. A historic patrol cabin in Loop D now has exhibits about the early patrol-cabin system and the Wonderland Trail’s history. It’s a worthwhile short look if you’re already walking through the campground, especially before setting off on the trail.
