Some pullouts are paved and others are gravel. The road is steep, winding and has no shoulders, so pull fully into a marked turnout rather than stopping in the lane. In a typical year, vehicle access is seasonal, usually from early July to mid-September. NPS recommends RVs and vehicles towing trailers longer than 25 feet stop before continuing past the White River Campground intersection.

Sunrise Road White River View is a group of roadside pullouts between Sunrise Point and the Sunrise area, about 9.1 or 9.4 miles from the White River gate. It’s a quick stop on the steep, winding drive, not one overlook platform or a separate hike. On a clear day, look across the White River Valley toward Mount Rainier and Mount Adams.

The east rim of Rainier’s summit crater can show above the ice when the weather clears. Escaping steam and gases warm the rock along the rim, keeping it exposed through the mountain’s permanent ice. Rainier rises to 14,410 feet and has 25 glaciers covering 34 square miles.
