Sabine Hut

Sabine Hut is a serviced 32-bunk hut overlooking Lake Rotoroa, partway around the Travers–Sabine Circuit. Its broad lake view and warm shared space make it a good overnight pause on a multi-day tramp. The full circuit is an advanced 4–7-day trip; this isn't a drive-up stop. Book ahead—no walk-in bunks are held.

Track access is part of the circuit. Some trampers finish at the hut and take a water taxi to Rotoroa village; check its availability before building your exit around it. The old Rotoroa Route along the eastern lakeshore between the village and hut is permanently closed, so there isn't a walk-in link that way. Another route climbs steeply and very openly from behind the hut toward Rotomaninitua / Lake Angelus; allow about six hours and treat it as a serious alpine route. Sandflies can be thick here, so bring repellent.

Two 16-bunk rooms open off a shared living area. The hut was built in 2002 by a team that included Bill Barnett and Tom Brown. There are mattresses, heating and non-flush toilets. Tap water is untreated; boil it before drinking. Bring your own food; there is no meal service. Campers near the hut can use its water and toilets only.

Lake Rotoroa has lindavia, an invasive alga that causes sticky “lake snow.” To help stop it spreading, dry gear completely for 48 hours before swimming or taking water from an alpine lake or tarn. If your gear is still wet or damp, use the cleaning station at the hut before moving on.
