Overview

About The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge

Why stop

  • A memorable fireside pub stop with views across two moorland dales
  • Strong food, ale and Coast to Coast appeal

Heads up

  • Busy service can be slow and inconsistent
  • Historic building has steps throughout
Perched high on Blakey Ridge at around 1,325 feet, this 16th-century family-run freehouse has been serving travellers since the 1550s. It sits alone on open moorland with Farndale falling away to the west and Rosedale to the east, so the drive in is part of the appeal: miles of heather, dry-stone walls and big sky before the long, low building appears beside the road. Inside it is the opposite of the exposed landscape outside, with original low beams, thick stone walls and open fires.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

  • Book ahead for the restaurant; the bar area is unreserved, so it is the fallback if you have not planned.
  • There is a large car park across the road, which makes this an easy stop on a moors driving day.
  • Weekends and holiday periods get busy. Aim for early lunch or an earlier evening sitting if you want a quieter room and faster service. Cold, clear days are wonderful, when the fires are lit and the views run for miles.

This is one of the best-known Coast to Coast stops, sitting near the summit of the ridge with the high moorland crossings on either side. It works equally well as a base for local walks past nearby howes and burial mounds and the old cross on the ridge. Practical touches include 13 bedrooms with breakfast included, tea and coffee facilities and TV in the rooms, some dog-friendly rooms on request, secure cycle storage and free Wi-Fi.

  • Service can slow right down when it is full, and reviewers report that food quality varies from visit to visit. Go with time in hand rather than a tight schedule.
  • The historic building has steps throughout and is not recorded as wheelchair accessible, though there is mention of an accessible toilet and staff who will help. Contact the inn directly before relying on access.
  • The setting is genuinely remote and exposed. Weather on the ridge can turn quickly in any season, so dress for wind even if the valleys are calm, and allow extra driving time in poor conditions.
