Parking

Small lower car park beside the road near the top of Chimney Bank, reached from Hutton-le-Hole via the signed Bank Top road. Parking is free and the compacted-aggregate car park is reasonably level. An upper car park is available if the lower lot is full, but the lower lot is the correct start for the kiln approach.

Safety

The ironstone workings are fragile, so do not climb on the remains. The short exit from the lower car park reaches about a 1:8 gradient; the route is otherwise close to level. The open route has little shelter and some coarse aggregate.

“You're nearing Bank Top Kilns above Rosedale. Those long stone arches were ovens, not doorways: Victorian workers roasted ironstone with coal to make it lighter before the mineral railway carried it across the moors.”

Hiking Miles without Stiles (For many) - Rosedale Mineral Railway

The routeAn easy out and back of about 2 km (1.

An easy out and back of about 2 km (1.25 miles) in total, allow around 1 hour at a relaxed pace with stops. From the lower car park at Bank Top, a short access path climbs past the disused roasting kilns and joins the course of the old Rosedale ironstone railway. Follow the level track along the dale side to a sculptural viewpoint bench, then return the same way. This is the short promoted version, not the full Rosedale Railway circuit or a dale loop.

The payoff comes early and stays with you: broad views across the Rosedale valley, open moorland and grass either side of the trackbed, and the hulking kiln remains where ironstone was roasted before being loaded onto the railway. Along the corridor you pass traces of the railway itself and of the cottages where the workers lived. The bench at the turnaround is the natural place to sit and take in the length of the dale.

Footing and difficultyEasy overall.

Easy overall. The track is hard and firm, compacted aggregate and cinder, roughly 2 m wide on the old railway and about 1 m wide at the start. The only real effort is the short exit from the lower car park, which reaches a gradient of about 1:8; after that the route is close to level.

For wheeled users, this is a partially accessible route rather than a fully accessible one. The surface has a coarse gravel character in places, and some visitors using a powered chair or assist may find a little extra help useful.

  • The lower car park on the Rosedale Mineral Railway site, beside the road near the top of Chimney Bank, is the correct start if you want to walk past the kilns.
  • Reached from Hutton-le-Hole on the signed Bank Top road.
  • Parking is free, and both car parks are reasonably level compacted aggregate.
  • The lower lot is small; there is an upper car park if it is full.

The ironstone workings are fragile, so look but do not climb on the remains. The route runs across open ground with little shelter, so dress for the weather. Watch your footing on the short steeper pull out of the car park and on the rougher patches of coarse aggregate.

HistoryRosedale was a busy ironstone district in the 19th century.

Rosedale was a busy ironstone district in the 19th century. Ore was raised locally and roasted in the calcining kilns you pass at the start, which reduced its weight before it travelled out over the moors by mineral railway. The trackbed you walk today is that railway, and the cottage traces nearby mark where the workforce lived.

Walkers after a longer day can follow the wider Rosedale Railway route or link into dale loops from the same area. For a brief, low-gradient heritage walk with a proper view at the end, this short version is the better fit.
