Guide
Staircase Campground is a developed 49-site campground beside the North Fork Skokomish, under old-growth forest in Olympic’s southeastern corner. Some sites sit right by the river, making this a good choice if you want water and forest close to camp. Expect a simple campground, with no showers.
Sites include picnic tables, fire rings and animal-proof food lockers. During the main service season, the campground has potable water and accessible restrooms. From mid-fall into May, service changes to pit toilets, with no water or trash collection.
North Staircase Road is unpaved and weather-dependent. In snowy conditions, the park may gate it about a mile before the end, so build that possibility into a cold-season visit.
The North Fork valley is part of the story of Lieutenant Joseph P. O’Neil’s 1890 expedition across the southern Olympics. His party surveyed the watersheds of nine rivers and cut a trail corridor through 93 miles of wilderness.
