Staircase Picnic Area

Overview

Tucked beside the North Fork Skokomish River and the Staircase Ranger Station, the Staircase Picnic Area is classic Olympic: mossy giants overhead, the rush of clear water nearby, and trails leaving right from your table. It’s a low-effort, high-reward stop—especially if you want a lingering lunch before or after the Staircase Rapids Loop.

What it’s like

Expect a tranquil, forested nook with big Douglas-firs and cedar, filtered light, and the sound of the river. It’s a day-use cluster of picnic spots in a compact hub that also includes parking, restrooms, and quick access to several trails. River views and short walks are the point here; it feels quieter than the park’s headline areas, yet still delivers the lush Staircase vibe.

Getting there and access

Reaching Staircase involves a winding approach past Lake Cushman and a stretch of unpaved road. That road can close in winter or after storms, so check current NPS conditions before you go. A small entry booth may or may not be staffed. The riverside corridor is flood‑prone, and high water can reshape banks and occasionally affect facilities or routes.

Wildlife

This rich river-and-forest habitat supports songbirds, woodpeckers, small mammals, and the usual Olympic suspects. Black bears are present—store food properly and never leave it unattended. You’ll notice the forest’s natural cycles at work; this corner of the park has a long fire history that helped shape today’s big-tree stands.

Best time to visit

• Summer weekdays: the sweet spot for snagging a table and enjoying long daylight
• Spring and fall: beautiful and often quieter, but expect colder temps, wet weather, and limited services
• Midday light is fine under the canopy; for photography along the river and rapids, early or late light is softer and less crowded

• No food service or store here; nearest services are down-valley in Hoodsport
• Pack out all trash, especially outside summer when collection may be limited
• Pets are allowed in developed areas but not on park trails that begin here
