Shady Lane is exactly what it sounds like: a tranquil, deeply shaded walk through old-growth forest along the North Fork Skokomish River near the Staircase Ranger Station. Expect towering cedars, firs, and maples draped in moss, plus easy river access where you can sit on logs and watch the current. It’s an easy, family-friendly outing that delivers classic Olympic rainforest vibes without the effort.

Route, distance, and difficulty: plan for about 1.4–1.8 miles round trip on the core Shady Lane segment with minimal elevation change (roughly 30 feet). It’s an out-and-back on a natural dirt path with roots and occasional rocks. Want more? Extend to the Staircase Rapids for a roughly 4-mile round trip day—worth it if you’ve got the time and energy.

Trail feel and conditions: in wet weather this path can run like a shallow creek and puddles linger—waterproof boots make a big difference. In late fall and winter, expect patchy snow or ice in spots. The forest is lush and atmospheric year-round, and the riverside detours make for good snack breaks. Wildlife sightings, especially elk, are most likely early or late in the day.

Logistics: park at the Staircase Ranger Station/Campground area at the north end of Lake Cushman; the trail heads out near the bridge over the river. No permit is required for day hiking, though standard park entrance fees apply. Pets are not allowed on this trail.

Tips and extensions: if it’s wet, bring waterproof footwear (and even rain pants if you dislike brushy, soggy cuffs). In colder months, carry light traction for isolated icy patches. To turn this into more of a day, tack on Staircase Rapids or connect to other nearby trails in the Staircase area like Dry Creek or Cooper Creek.

Best time to hike: this one works year-round. Summer stays pleasantly cool under the dense canopy. Spring and fall are peak moss-and-fern season (and peak mud—come prepared). Winter can be quiet and beautiful after storms if access is open; always check current conditions and any temporary closures before you go.

Pros

  • Consistently cool, shaded forest even on hot summer days
  • Easy, kid-friendly access to the river for picnics and play

Cons

  • Often muddy or even creek-like in wet months
  • Very short unless you extend to Staircase Rapids

Parking

Park at the Staircase Ranger Station/Campground near the north end of Lake Cushman; the trail starts near the bridge over the North Fork Skokomish River.

Caution

Expect puddles, mud, and slick roots in wet weather; patchy snow/ice possible in late fall and winter. Occasional storm or wildfire closures can affect Staircase access—check conditions before you go. No dogs.
